Okay, I won't even pretend to know the rules.
I never know why they stop. I haven't been able to find any kind of link between what is happening on the field and when the ref stops the play.
I have even less of an idea about how they get started again. Sometimes it results in a scrum, sometimes in a line-in (side-in? when they throw it in from the side), and sometimes somebody kicks it or just picks it up and starts running.
But it's a pretty amazing sport, I think. It's fast, it's aggressive, and the stops usually aren't too long. And when they do stop, there is often a bit of shoving going on, which is nice while I'm in hockey withdrawal.
So I went to see my friend David (who plays for Geneva) play in the Swiss semi-finals this weekend, and had a great time. They're playing next Saturday against Zurich in the finals, and you should probably come.
I took some pictures, too. You can find more here.

Darryl, sorry for always saying the same thing, but - great pics. You have captured the intensity and the action so well. Jon played rugby in high school, so maybe he can help you out a bit... I never really knew what was happening, but we went to his games as much as we could, just to watch. Volleyball (your choice in school) is definitely much easier to understand!
And results in fewer broken noses. I don't really regret it.
And I'm glad you like the pics - thanks.
The object of the game is to give your teammate the best wedgy
Ouch. Ouch, ouch, ouch, ouch, ouch.
I always thought of it as aggressive huging (=
I'm with you on the aggressive part. It's not quite how I like to think of hugging, though. Of course, that could just be because I don't really have much of a thing for large, sweaty men.
Ew.
I guess I can't say "gorgeous pictures"... but I mean that. Except for the wedgie ones.
i'll let you guys in on a little secret
the point of the game was to make up new rules, so just when someone thinks they understand what's going on, we stop the play secretly roll some dice to see whether we should do a line-out, scrum, or drop-kick.
fortunately, i was always the little guy behind all the action, so i had the fewest number of broken noses. my job was to kick the ball out of bounds; try figuring out how THAT fits into the strategy!
Well, these ones aren't really supposed to be pretty, so I'm going to take the "ew" as a compliment.
And Jon, the kicking out of bounds thing really threw me off. There should be a bigger penalty for doing that... the guy who does it should have to do push-ups or say a tongue-twister or something. Or buy everyone in the crowd ice cream.
Mmmmmmm....... ice cream.
No, "ew" was for wedgies and the reaction to your idea of hugging a lot of sweaty men.
The photos themselves are spectacular. The color is so sharp and the action and expressions are great. Sports photography is a whole bizness... and you just marched right in and did it. Must be your 100% intuition, is all I can figure!
100% intuition and a good lens... ;-)
I'm definitely with you on the wedgies and sweaty men, though.
