Alinghi

I got home in time to catch a few minutes of the America's Cup race this evening... it doesn't look good for our heroes - Alinghi is down 2-1. Of course, I have no idea how many legs there are to the race... maybe it's like snooker where they have a best of 31 or something, so the danger is not quite as dark as I may fear.

I think I may have tuned in at a bad time. I've watched it before and found it pretty interesting... of course, that was with English (rather than Italian) commentary. But while I was watching today, I didn't even know they were racing. They guys in the boat were just sitting there. They weren't even sitting hanging over the side. They were just watching the water.

It made me wonder... how would you feel if you were in this world championship kind of thing, had been working for a year to qualify, and, because of whatever wind conditions or the layout of the course or something, you ended up mostly just sitting on the side of the boat trying to figure out if you were ahead or the other guys were? I mean, I'm a team-spirit kind of guy - I really am. But I can't help thinking I'd feel a little disappointed. It's like sitting on the bench while your team wins the Stanley Cup. Sure, you still get to carry around the trophy and probably have a nice bonus coming, but you would feel a little out of place being, say, the only one not sweating at all.

In any case, Hop Suisse! Bring it home again, Alinghi boys. You show them: there's nothing that a whole lot of money can't do.

This seems to be a recurring theme in a handful of sports. Sailing, golf, NASCAR... the winners success all seem to be dependent on their gear. Maybe that's another good reason to play rugby. I don't care how thick your shirt and mouth-guard are--if the other guy can rock you, he sure will.

Yeah, here's where we part way, man... that's a good reason to WATCH rugby...

You think they're just sitting there not breakin' a sweat? Just you wait, 'enry 'iggins.

Some friends and I were sailing around in San Francisco one weekend during a big regatta. We accidentally crossed the course in front of this huge, amazingly powerful sailboat. Dang - were we ever in the wrong place at the wrong time. Those guys were working really hard and their tension at seeing us in the way was palpable... they would have been more than happy to see us capsize if that got us out of the path...

I'm worried about you, man. Pretty soon you are going to be watching cross-country skiing with great excitement, hoping that today's race is an extra long one, like 50 km.

Christine, I'm not saying they're not nervous. I'm just saying that when I was watching they were all sitting on the side sipping drinks with little umbrellas in them, looking at the other boat.

And I maybe wrong about the umbrellas - I was watching in a bit of a hurry.

Troy, it will be a long, long time before I am watching cross-country skiing. I do have a theory on biathlon, though: they should give them pellets that are non-lethal but like the rubber bullets cops use, and they have a limited number for the course... say, the total number of targets plus two. If a skier decides that it's worth more for them to take out another player than it is to save the bullet for the target, they make the move. NOW, we have a sport...
