Fine Art

I'm going to a Sound Of Music party tonight. I realize that half of you who are reading this are checking the url and wondering if you've somehow landed on the wrong page. But no, it's me, and I'm going. And I'm going to have fun.

It's gotten me thinking. How does one prepare for a SoM party? Are there Rocky Horror Picture show kinds of rituals that I should be prepared for? Should I wear the costume I got cheap on eBay from some guy called "Prnc_Hrry"? Break out the lederhosen? In any case, at the urging of my therapist, I've decided to leave all my firearms at home. And you know, I think she's right.

Eurovision is coming up in the next week, and I am super pumped about that. I don't think that the semi-finals on Thursday are going to be broadcast in English, but hopefully the finals on Saturday will be. By the way, when I find out what time they are, you're invited.

And finally, I've been in a total Klimt mood lately. Color, texture, hints of gothic masterpieces... this guy had it going on. Does anyone know of a museum with a decent collection?

Got to go. I need to make myself a suit out of my curtains.

Love that painting. Ever see the movie "Dying Young"? It had that painting as a major theme and a bunch of other lovely readheads. :-) Speaking of redheads... today I had brunch at an old friend's home, and one of her little girls looks quite a bit like your chick... similar sweet-cheeked face and fluffy curly red hair.

As for SOM... I once dressed up with a date for an SOM sing along bash (it was his idea and he concluded the invitation with "yes, I am groveling")... our outfits were so funny that Swiss friends of mine put our picture on their fridge. It would have been great except for one thing: it was held in the Castro Theatre in San Francisco (yes, THAT Castro). I never knew SoM had so many double entendres...

Yeah, well, everyone loves the sound of Music. Classic film buffs, Austrians, gay men, and communists. It has a little something for everyone, I guess. And no, haven't seen Dying Young. Redheads are good, but is it as depressing as it sounds?

Something for everyone but you! ha!

Anyway the film is sad... Probably a chick flick, a bit of early GenX pathos...Julia Roberts is the redhead in question (but she's not dying!) it's been a long time since I saw it. But it's got a bunch of terrific art in it, it was filmed partly in San Francisco and partly in Marin County (beautiful grassland area just north) and I used to really like the score. I have it in my huge pile of old cassette tapes.

Anyway, lovely painting. I always get the sweet sad/wistful feeling when I see it.

Chick flick I can handle, but I'm not so interested in sad movies. I have enough that is worthy of sadness thrust upon me without seeking more of it out. Maybe for now I'll stick to the paintings...

No kidding. Normally I have a rule: unless I have a serious reason for wanting to see the movie, the ending has to be happy or the good guys win, or I'm not interested.

I'm even pickier, maybe. I really hate movies that are sad in the middle to just to make the happy part seem happier. If a movie is sad, I want to walk away completely, thoroughly depressed. If it's happy, I want it to be a happy-happy-joy-joy laugh fest all the way through. You know, kind of like life.

Gads I forgot where that happy happy joy joy schtick comes from... who gave us that immortal concept? Ren and Stimpy? "Steeempeeee, you eeeeediot..."

anyway(s), I'll be sure never to suggest another movie to you... will have to watch mine in secret, all huddled in the closet with with headphones and my snacks. And I won't share.

Yes, it was R&S. Here's the odd part - I never watched that show, and don't know it as a song (which google tells me it is). I'm not sure where I got it.

And I'm not that picky. I mean, I watched the sound of music, right? I like lots of movies, but I have to admit I have a strong preference for either really interesting, unusual artsy movies or the stupidest-of-the-stupid guy movies (think Anchorman, Dumb & Dumber, Zoolander...).

When I say it that way, maybe I'm the one who should be in the closet...
