Yes, you read it right. It's a fascinating insight into Swiss culture, and it's on TV right now, complete with slow-motion replays of the cows digging in the "ring", standing side by side, apparently unaware that they are supposed to be locked in fierce combat, and wearing huge bells. It's like Sumo, but without all the rice-throwing.
I'm recording it, so if you live in Calgary (or Geneva, for that matter) you may, at some point, have the pleasure of watching it in all of it's "wow, did they really put this on TV?" glory.
And I'd like it to be noted and added to my cultural sensitivity score that I didn't put culture into ironic quotes in the first paragraph. I should be a diplomat, or something.
Oh, and for those of you unable to wait for the full version with slow-motion replays, interviews with the farmers and their families (none actually with the cows yet, but I'm keeping a close eye out), and what I'm sure is riveting commentary, you can get a taste here:

Moo diva?
I must say, European television is ridiculous. We just got back home yesterday, and I have to say that there was not a lot of interesting programming on European TV. Not that we watched TV too much on our holiday, but when we did, it was either the news (because we could understand it), Italian game shows (and I couldn't believe how many were on at once), or snooker on EuroSport (also found in abundance. it's like the world cup of snooker was on or something).
Contrast that to the hours of quality programming waiting to be watched on our PVR. It's a good thing that European TV didn't convert me to reading books or something! :)
Yeah, books are tricky. I mean, with TV, there's nothing to carry. That's why books will never win.
I am looking forward to having more than CNN international, BBC prime (with their "best" shows, roughly 6 years after originally being aired), CSNBC (hooray`- business news!) and Euronews (8 minutes of news, looped over... and over.... and over... and over...).
I may never have to read again.
Er, in my language that is. I got so enthralled with the list of four that I forgot the point.
Probably those books again... they rot your brain...
VACHEMENT FOU!
Once I actually got around to watching this, it hit me that you were talking about two FEMALE cows. Not steers or bulls... bucolic cows, udders a-sway.
To really bad Swiss-type techno.
Man. The Swiss fascination with cows knows no bounds. Seeing as I didn't own a TV while living there, I guess I missed out. I thought my experiences with Des Alpes and drinking raw milk straight from the dirty dairy barn next door to the chalet were pretty up close and personal. But this takes it to a whole 'nother level.
