Deliverance

The more I hear, the more I realize that I like a lot of music with banjo in it. It's a good thing Korey doesn't read my blog any more or he would be absolutely cringing, but I just dig it. I like it in traditional bluegrass (or even non-traditional, but still very much in-the-genre stuff like Nickel Creek), but even more in new, rocky stuff. Some great examples are Sherié Austin, or Carrie Underwood. It's really, really cool. Next step is to check out Bela Fleck a bit more.

So, time for a straw poll: what's the instrument, artist of musical style you are would classify as a bit of a guilty secret? Time for all you closet Céline fans to step out. Oh, and accordion is spelled with two c's.

You know, just in case.

hmm... my vote would probably be the keytar.

which reminds me. i've been wanting to introduce you (assuming you're not already aware...) to an alt rock band called mute math. the lead singer plays some nice vintage rhodes most of the time, but he does pull out his keytar for different bits.

but i recommend them not for their keytar, but rather for what, in my humble opinion, is some rather notable drumming. he plays a vintage rogers kit with kick, snare, floor tom, hihat and ride cymbal. absolutely amazing what he does with so little.

the bassist is, also by my estimation, darn good. they work very well together.

they're fairly trendy sounding, but even if the style doesn't work for you, there's no denying the talent. the vocalist is very sting-influenced... some songs more obvious than others.

one of the more obvious tracks is what my drummer friends love, so i figured you should at least hear that. not my favorite tune of theirs, but it gets the job done.

one of my favorites is called 'break the same'. these tracks were pulled from their live dvd, which is also fantastic. they put on the best club show i have ever been to.

anyway, you can tell i'm a fanboy. i'll stop spamming your blog. if you'd like more i can provide the necessary fix.

Sure, but can they all be the only gay in the viliage?

For me it's no secret: Roxette man! The older stuff anyway. I've loved their rocky material since I was 7 years old!
Otherwise I have a soft spot for musicals and those kinds of songs and the types of voices that go with them. Frank Sinatra certainly.
Oh, and Christmas choir music. English cathedral choirs that is.

On a whim I did read your blog today! It's not that I actively "not" read it, I just forget. You know I've always found your ramblings amusing. :)

As to banjos, your fears are confirmed. I have, in fact, cringed. However, as we discussed briefly over Christmas, I have abandoned all hope of us ever liking the same music again (unless you have a spare copy of "Rage of Angels" still kicking about) so it was only the smallest of cringes, and immediately followed by some rolled-eyes.

I think my dirty music secret is house music...or, at least, what I believe is house music. The rabbit hole doesn't go so far down such that I'm certain of the genre that I'm attracted to. It brings back memories of my (admittedly infrequent) South Beach club days and just makes me feel warm. It probably corresponds/is responsible for my growing interest in dance. My wife, bless her, is a passionate dancer, and I am, sadly, a Mennonite. We. Don't. Dance. But it's so darned infectious, that a few nights ago at a big company party, I dragged Jenny to the dance floor! And I don't really remember doing anything else that night (note: possibly related to alcohol consumption). So I can only assume I danced a lot. The wife even said much later (post-hangover) that she was quite impressed. On the other hand, she's my wife and legally obligated to think I'm fantastic. What's that? You didn't write that line in to her vows? Now you know better.
