Good Genes

From a colleague at dinner this week, shaking her head:

"I don't get it. How do you eat like that (pointing at a rapidly-disappearing steak) and look like that (pointing at me)?"

Sure, I haven't been approached by GQ (recently) and won't be invited to open tryouts for... well, any Olympic team, but in the great genetic lottery, I'll take what I can get...

Have a good weekend, everyone!

Yeah, good genes are the best. Except if you're a woman you're required to feel guilty about them and have people you consider friends say things like: "I hate you, you're so skinny!" Um.. thanks?

Your sister seems to be from the same gene pool (funny how that works...). Ten days after the birth of her baby, she's back at her junior high weight and is wearing jeans. I'd just like to know what gene pool your dad and I are from?.? (as we both struggle with weight issues)...

Ah, yes - one of the major advantages of being a man. I can just pretend that I didn't notice. Actually, most of the time I don't even have to pretend.

Mom, I think it must be Grandma D. She's never weighed more than about 80 lbs for as long as I can remember...

Yeah, these genes work out well as far as I'm concerned. I tried to have a race with Erin (my fiance) once--she wanted to lose 8 pounds, so I tried to gain 8 pounds.

I never would have guessed how impossible it is for me to gain weight. It took her a few weeks, and I think that in trying, I actually lost weight in that span of time.

OK - I can just tell from the way this conversation is going, it's the "other" side of the gene pool that you're all gooing over it - I'll drag myself back to the couch - maybe my next session can soon happen so I don't have to leave my couch before it takes place. Good thing I love my couch almost as much as you love yours, Darryl. Maybe you got the gene for picking out and loving your great couch from my side (as she drags herself back to her lonely couch...) Also, so what about your Dad??? (Hmmm) (Maybe he was adopted...) Maybe this should be taken off line - it feels like it's getting too personal...

I just had to let you all know how good life really is. As I was just getting ready for bed, I felt something small and light hit the floor (no it wasn't me). I had a hunch, and reached down, and there was the darling little piece of puffed wheat squares that had disappeared earlier in the evening when I was eating it. I'm now beginning to wonder if we're getting to the bottom of why my side of the gene pool is a little shady - we do love our puffed wheat squares... Now I can go to bed happy!
