So here's the problem: the light is really good for about 10 minutes before sunrise and maybe twice that long after. And the sun comes up about 6:15.
There aren't many days that I have to sleep in. The little chick is here to wake me up Saturdays, Mondays, and Tuesdays. Wednesday I'm usually off to the airport, and Friday I meet to talk and pray with some friends at 7:30. That leaves Thursdays, which don't really pan out well since I have to go to work, and Sundays.
Getting up at 5:30 is not a huge deal, I guess, but between work and concerts lately, I was reluctant to give up that sleep. Still, I wanted the shots, and I had been curious for a while about what sunrises over the lake could look like. Art won out over practicality, and here are a few of the shots that I got...

That was worth it. Forget the flowers.
Have you ever seen the red fireball sunrise over the lake? I was hoping to see something like that while there but never did.
Got a duck for me? :-)
Red fireball was kind of what I was hoping for, but no luck. For all I know, it may happen every other day of the summer... the only other time I would be up that early is if I'm on my way to the airport.
And yes, duck... I need to get one ready for Troy, too. What size do you want? Even if you print it, it's easier for me to manage the size in photoshop rather than you having to deal with matting or custom framing later...
Hmm... 8x10 inch and 5x7 (not sure which one Dad will go for) would be super, but do you need that converted into metric?
Thanks for supplying me with a fab 60th birthday present for my dad. And I really love the sunrise shots, and the light in the water around the bird.
Oh and I can guarantee you I was never up at 5:30 or even 6am for that fireball. It was more like 7 am. I saw it twice: once in August and once in March, both times from the Aubonne/Mont-sur-Rolle hillside.
So worth a few hours of sleep.
Like the sense of movement in the first few and stillness/promise in the last.
And red fireball? Have no idea what that means but I can imagine . . .
Thanks. In retrospect, the tiredness only lasts a couple of days... the pictures last forever (or until the server goes up in smoke, I guess)...
I actually really love shots like the last one... they remind me of water-color paintings. I have a few of them, and have been toying with the idea of getting them printed large and on canvas. The strange part of it is that I don't really like water-color painting, but somehow in a picture it just feels right.
