Hurricane

Well, my mixer is still in the shop, but I figured out how to rig up my other interface to do a bit of recording, so operation "Fix The World's Incomplete Recordings" continues.

This time I added backing vocals on a tune called Hurricane, by Mindy Smith. You can download it here.

Okay, so it doesn't really fit me lyrically, but it's a gorgeous song. And she has space all over this album for me to sing along, so this won't be the last duet we do. I think I may be in love.

Wow. A++. Send it to Mindy.

Thanks for sharing that.

Thanks - glad you enjoyed it. I'm not 100% convinced she would, but I guess you never know...

Very nice, Darryl. You are such a talented guy! I think Mom's aren't really supposed to say things like that, but I'm going to do it anyway - none of this politically correct stuff for us, right, Darryl?

I think she WOULD like it (more importantly, her producers would) and I think you should send it.

You're a killer backup singer. And I mean that most sincerely. You're also really good at recording, which is an art in itself.

Thanks, guys.

Hard for me not to picture Garth from Wayne's World when I say this, but I like to sing. And I like to play. And I especially like it when I can share it.

Charlie Peacock sez:

"Don't be afraid to be a long shot..."

Send that song (or maybe a few) in to them. I don't think it's such a long shot. In fact, I sent your recording to my music pastor, asking, "what do I need to do to learn how to nail harmony like this?"

You and your 100% intuition. It pays off now and then.

Hey Darryl's Mom: Did you ever dream you'd have a kid who'd grow up to be such a brilliantly multi-talented artist? Pretty fun, eh?

Hmmmm... I always thought it was "don't be afraid to be a big shot". Need to get my ears checked.

I will send it on... there are a couple things I need to tweak on it first that I've discovered after having some more listening time, but then it's off to Mindy. Her slightly gushing grattitude, untold riches and world domination will follow shortly after, and I will mention your encouragement the first time I'm on Conan.

As for how to do it, there are probably simpler ways, but I can only give you my method:

1. Do some recording
2. Realize that you are really, really flat, most of the time
3. Spend 10 years thinking, every time you sing, "don't go flat, don't go flat, don't go flat"
4. Continue recording until you can listen to yourself without cringing
5. Get a good mic and then sing your heart out...

hahahaha

Long. Definitely long.

Don't change it!! It's already perfect! How often is THAT achieved?

And public gratitude won't do much good... (I prefer Letterman) First, Letterman doesn't listen. Second, unless you blow my cover, who you gonna thank? "Well, Dave, it's this person who signs their name "anonymous" or, "the REAL anonymous" on my blog all the time. I could tell you who they are, but then I'd have to kill you. And that would be sad."

I know I was flat when I sang with my ipod while walking home from the train station every night in Nyon. But I didn't care. I was so starved to sing (from not driving in the car, where I do most of my singing) that I imagined the neighbors thinking, "there goes that wierd person singing in English at 1am again..." Tant pis.

I like #4. And I am not there yet. But I started working pretty hard on #5 at rehearsal on Weds. I have sworn off "hiding" my vocal behind other people's. Thanks for the motivation.

Okay, so Letterman is out of the picture. But I'll tell you what I want to fix, and when I get the new version up you can compare.

Overall, my vocal level needs to come back just a touch to be sure that hers never loses the focus.

On "rain" at 46 seconds, my voice disappears half way through... I need to boost the level so I stay with her until the end of the word.

On "I" at 1:06, I need to find a new note. I'm not sure the one I'm on is completely out of tune, but it's certainly not the one I want.

The "s" in "see" at 1:46 isn't tight, and it's too strong a sound to have mine and hers at different times.

On the first line of the chores at 2:00, the inflections in my voice don't match hers well. Not bad, but can be better. The "sense" and "salvage" are a bit rough, too, and I need to clean up the timing or mix the "s" sounds in lower.

The next chorus hauls, though. I love that one, and the tone and inflections are just what they should be.

A little more vibrato on the last word would be good.

Thankfully, with being producer and vocalist, I can tell myself this without having to worry about dealing with my fragile/tempestuous singer's ego. Now if I could just get myself to start showing up to sessions on time...

Oh, and on "only" at 2:26 there's a high note that I've been hearing in my head that I want to try for. Not sure if I can get it, but if I can, it'll be sweet.

so here's a funny story. I've been away for that past 6 weeks taking a theatre course so I've spent a lot of work time catching up on your ever entertaining/insightful/reflective blogs. So I downloaded the song and carried on with my morning reading (as guilt overwhelms me that I'm not actually doing any work. So what if it's been an hour, it's my first week back!) and the song was almost over before I remembered that you have added the duet feel (I call it duet cause you're singing the whole thing which teeters dangerously on the line between duet and background vocals). So I've listened a few more times. All that said, nice work.
